Behavioral Parent Training
Skills Series FAQs

Do you accept insurance?

In Colorado I accept Rocky Mountain/United Healthcare (Medicaid and commercial plans), UMR, Aetna, and self pay.

In Hawai’i, as a pre-licensed therapist, I am not able to be paneled with insurance companies and only accept self pay. I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots for those with financial need.

During our initial consultation, we can discuss fees and payment options to ensure they work for your situation.

What is Behavioral Parent Training (BPT)?

Behavioral Parent Training is an evidence-based approach that teaches parents specific techniques to positively influence their child's behavior. It focuses on strengthening the parent-child relationship while providing consistent, effective discipline strategies.

Who is this skills series designed for?

This series is designed for parents and caregivers of children aged 3-18 who are experiencing mild to moderate behavioral challenges at home, school, or in social settings.

Do our kids come to sessions?

No, this series is for parents/caregivers. I provide family therapy if needed for children aged 14 and up separately. The behavioral parent training skills can be used well in addition to family or individual therapy.

What kinds of behavioral issues does this program address?

The program addresses common challenges such as non-compliance, tantrums, aggression, defiance, whining, sibling conflicts, homework struggles, and mild emotional regulation difficulties.

How is the program structured?

The series consists of weekly sessions that build upon each other. Each session includes instruction, demonstration, practice, and take-home activities to reinforce skills.

What specific skills will I learn?

You'll learn techniques like positive reinforcement, effective commands, natural and logical consequences, active listening, problem-solving with your child, and strategies to prevent challenging behaviors.

How long is each session, and how many sessions are there?

Each session is 50 minutes. The complete series includes 8-10 weekly sessions, with optional follow-up sessions.

Will the strategies work for children of all ages?

These skills are evidenced to work with children aged 3-18 years old. The core principles work across age groups and I provide age-appropriate adaptations for preschoolers, school-age children, and teenagers.

Do both parents/caregivers need to attend?

Research shows that having even just one parent/caregiver practicing the skills positively impacts child behavior. However, if more than one caretaker is available, having consistency in the approach can enhance the skills and strengthen the caretaker alliance.

What if my child has been diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, or another condition?

This program can be beneficial for children with these diagnoses, though it's designed to complement, not replace, any specialized treatment they may be receiving. Please let me know about any diagnoses so we can help you adapt strategies appropriately.

How quickly will I see results?

Many parents notice initial improvements within 2-3 weeks of consistent implementation. More significant and lasting changes typically develop over 2-3 months as both parents and children adjust to new patterns.

What if the strategies don't seem to be working?

I provide troubleshooting support during sessions. Sometimes strategies need fine-tuning to match your child's specific needs. If challenges persist, we can discuss whether additional evaluation or support might be helpful.

Is this the same as therapy?

No. BPT is an educational program that teaches parenting skills. While it has therapeutic benefits, it is not a substitute for individual or family therapy when those services are needed. I provide individual and family therapy for children ages 14 and up.

What materials will I need?

All core materials are provided as part of the program. You'll receive handouts for each of the skills access to online resources to support practice at home.

How much does the program cost?

Program costs vary by location and whether insurance coverage applies. Sliding scale fees are available. Please contact me for specific information.
