LGBTQ+ Therapy in Hawaii and Colorado: Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept insurance?
In Colorado I accept Rocky Mountain/United Healthcare (Medicaid and commercial plans), UMR, Aetna, and self pay.
In Hawai’i I accept UHA, HMAA, HMSA and HMSA Quest and self pay. I offer a limited number of sliding scale spots for those with financial need.
During our initial consultation, we can discuss fees and payment options to ensure they work for your situation.
What does it mean that you're pre-licensed?
As a pre-licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I have completed my master's degree and practicum experience and am in the process of accumulating the clinical hours required for full licensure.
During this time, I work under supervision of two American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) approved licensed marriage and family therapists who provide guidance and ensure the quality of care.
This arrangement provides you with the benefit of two clinical perspectives—mine and my supervisor's—while generally offering more affordable rates than fully licensed therapists. My supervisor and I meet regularly to discuss cases (while maintaining client confidentiality), allowing me to provide the best possible care during this final phase of my professional development.
Do I need to be "out" to start therapy?
Absolutely not. I meet you wherever you are in your journey and support you at your own pace.
Will my information be kept confidential?
Yes, I follow strict confidentiality guidelines. We will never out you or share your information without your explicit consent.
Do you work with LGBTQ+ teens?
Yes, I provide affirming care for adolescents with parental consent, and I am experienced in family therapy when needed.
What if my partner isn't LGBTQ+?
All relationship configurations are welcome. I provide support for both partners regardless of their identities.
I'm questioning my identity but not sure about anything yet. Is therapy right for me?
Therapy is an excellent space for exploration without pressure to label yourself or make any decisions. We support you through questioning and discovery at whatever pace feels right.
How do you handle religious or cultural conflicts around LGBTQ+ identity?
I understand that faith and culture are important parts of many people's lives. I help you navigate these complex intersections and find ways to honor all parts of yourself, whether that means finding affirming spiritual communities or working through family dynamics.
Do you provide letters for medical transition or legal name changes?
Yes, our therapists are experienced in writing letters for hormone therapy, surgeries, and legal documentation. We follow WPATH guidelines and work collaboratively with you and your medical team.
What's the difference between LGBTQ+ friendly and LGBTQ+ affirming therapy?
"Friendly" often means tolerant or accepting, while "affirming" means actively celebrating and supporting your identity as a strength. I go beyond basic acceptance to provide specialized, informed care.
I've had bad experiences with therapists before. How do I know this will be different?
I’m sorry you've had those experiences. My free consultation allows you to get a feel for our approach before committing. I also encourage you to advocate for yourself and tell me if anything doesn’t feel right so I can adjust to your needs.
Do you work with polyamorous or non-monogamous relationships?
Yes, I support all ethical relationship structures and understand the unique dynamics and challenges that can arise in consensual non-monogamy.
Can you help with LGBTQ+ parenting concerns?
Absolutely. I support LGBTQ+ parents, prospective parents, and families through adoption, fertility journeys, co-parenting arrangements, and raising children in affirming environments.
What if I'm dealing with both LGBTQ+ issues and other mental health conditions?
I take an integrated approach, understanding how your identity intersects with other aspects of your mental health like depression, anxiety, ADHD, or trauma. You won't have to compartmentalize different parts of yourself.
Do you offer group therapy or support groups?
I periodically offer specialized groups for different populations (like trans support groups or coming out groups). Contact me to learn about current offerings and waitlists.
